Captain Thomas Wheeler of Concord and Acton, MA

According to Shattuck's history of Concord, in 1668, Thomas Wheeler leased 260 acres from the town of Concord on the condition that he keep and protect cattle for the good of the inhabitants, and he also agreed to build a shingled house with chimneys and a barn.  He apparently built a grist-mill, the first in Acton.  In 1675, with the rank of Captain, he was sent to Brookfield with his company to protect Captain Edward Hutchinson as he tried to negotiate a treaty with the Native Americans there.  In the confrontation that followed, Wheeler was shot and was rescued by his son (who was also shot).  He wrote a memoir of the Brookfield expedition that is available online and has been used in various later sources. Captain Thomas Wheeler died on December 10, 1776 according to Concord's vital records.

George's life
George, his wife, Katherine (Pinn) Wheeler, and three of their children probably came to New England from Cranfield Parish, Bedforshire, England about 1638. Although the names of the parents of George are not clear, it is evident that he had two brothers who also came to Concord: Captain Timothy Wheeler and Captain Thomas Wheeler. The name, George Wheeler, appears in the Concord records from the time they were first kept until his death. He owned jointly with his brother, Timothy, considerable property including the original part of what is now The Colonial Inn in Concord. Together, the brothers owned most of the property left by Rev. Peter Bulkley. George possessed land in every part of the town including Brook Meadows, Fairhaven Meadow, The Cranefield, Walden Goose Pond, Fint's Pond, etc. His home lot and house consisted of eleven acres. (He owned Nut Meadow Pond- now Jennie Dugan Brook)He took the oath of freeman on June 2, 1641. In 1644, a petition was signed by George, Thomas & Joseph Wheeler and Robert Meriam 33; Elizabeth (Wheeler) Fletcher b. Jan. 3, 1635; Sarah (Wheeler) Don behalf of Mr. Ambrose Martin for compassion. On May 14, 1645, a petition was presented to the Town of Concord signed by George & Timothy Wheeler regarding the division of lands. At this time, George Wheeler received 20 acres of land. He was chosen to be an overseer of the south quarter. In 1666, proprietors listed: George Wheeler 24 lots & 434 acres; residence south near James Adam's.
