Cemetery Visits to Higganum, Thirty Mile Island Plantation - Haddam, Greenwood - Haddam, and Old Cemetery East Haven

Hattie Green (Parker) line through Almira Mesick (K2WD-T1B), Hattie's grandmother.

We visited a number of cemeteries and communities where Grandma Hattie Green Parker's ancestors came from in the Haddam, CT area.  Hattie Parker is my (Glen Parker's) grandmother on my father's side.  Below is the fan chart that contained these ancestors with Maria Spencer as the center of the fan.

Glen's Great Grandfather - Stephen Spencer, May 1753 – 19 August 1814,  L552-NYJ -
Good luck reading it.  We must take by faith what it had inscribed from previous researchers.

Founders of Haddam - Several great-grandparents that I know- William Clark, John Bailey, Daniel Brainerd, and Gerrard Spencer.  There easily could be more great-grandfathers related.

Glen's g-grandfather - Isaac Auger 1718 – 29 July 1808 - L7YC-7ZG

Isaac settled at Turkey Hill in Haddam, buying one acre and the house thereon for 130 pounds in 1752 and additional tracts later.

Three or four of his sons served in the American Revolution. His wife was the sister of Abraham Tyler, a Revolutionary War soldier.

He died when returning from Killingworth to visit one of his daughters. In crossing a small stream, he fell off his horse and died in shallow water.

Deacon Daniel Brainerd L55K-QWX Born 1642 died 1715

Daniel Brainerd was brought to America in 1641 when he was eight yrs. old to live with the Wadsworth family in Hartford, Connecticut. He remained with the family until 1662 when he took up residence in Haddam CT. There is a widely accepted belief that Daniel was from Braintree, England, but there are competing stories concerning the circumstances surrounding his arrival in America at such a young age: 1) that he was kidnapped from England and sold into indenture to the Wadsworth family where he was to live and work until he was 21, 2) that Daniel's parents knowingly arranged for this due to unrest in England, or 3) that he was orphaned. We do know that Wadsworth paid for the boy's passage in exchange for thirteen years of service and also "[t]o be learned to read and write and at the time of his freedom when twenty-one years old to be given two suits of clothes".
In 1662, Daniel, along with 27 other men, settled in an area now known as Haddam, Connecticut. His first home was reported to have been a cave. Soon, however, Daniel became the largest landowner and one of the most influential men in town. He served as constable, first Deacon, and first Justice of the peace in Haddam. He was also a surveyor, town assessor, plotter of land and roads, along with other offices including Commissioner to the General Assembly in Hartford.
Daniel married 1st Hannah Spencer (daughter of Gerrard (Ensign) Spencer and Hannah Hills) in 1663, 2nd Elizabeth Arnold Wakeman on March 30, 1693, and 3rd Hannah Spencer (daughter of Thomas (Sargent) Spencer and Sarah Bearding) on November 3, 1698. His home in Haddam was on town plot No.5 1/2 bounded on the west by Main St., north by John Bailey, east by the river, and south by Joseph Stannard. He died April 1, 1715, at age 74. He is buried in the ancient burying ground in Haddam, a few rods east of the Courthouse. Daniel Brainerd was the progenitor of nearly all who bears the name Brainerd/Brainard.
