Elder & Sister Parker Drive to Provincetown & Barnstable on Cape Code

Provincetown is a long way from our apartment in Waltham as you can see on this map.  You can also see Barnstable in the bottom of the U.  This is where Reverend John Lathrop was located.  The hearts on the map represent sites or lighthouses we visited.  Notice at the bottom of the map, the Island of Martha's Vineyard and all the sites we visited a few months ago.

The first landing site of the Pilgrims before choosing Plymouth.
Beautiful day, but a bit cold and windy!

You don't want to be on this jetty at the wrong time as some high tides cover it up.

The site where Pilgrims first landed before Plymouth.

The Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown, Massachusetts, was built between 1907 and 1910 to commemorate the first landfall of the Pilgrims in 1620 and the signing of the Mayflower Compact in Provincetown Harbor.

Another lighthouse!  Highland Light.

Nothing is better than New England clam chowder!

Sturgis Library, former home of Reverend John Lothrop.

Sturgis Library of Barnstable, Massachusetts, Original Home of Reverend John Lathrop
Built in 1644, this previous home of Reverend John Lathrop (or Lothropp), is now "the oldest building that houses a public library in America." "Since Reverend Lothrop used the front room of the house for public worship, another distinction of the Sturgis Library is that it is the oldest structure still standing in the United States where religious services were regularly held." The Honorable William Sturgis turned it into a library in 1867.

Original Bible of Reverend John Lothrop-  With burned pages.

The Reverend John Lothrop's Bible
This bible is on display in "The Lothrop Room" of the Sturgis Library in Barnstable, Massachusetts. Brought to America by John in 1634, the carefully handwritten repairs to the pages are preserved in what is now the oldest library in the United States.
"The story about the burn mark in the bible is that the page shown was burned during the trip across the Atlantic on the Griffin. Reverend John wrote in the missing text from memory."
